Hi my name is Kara and I am so glad I found this site. I am 47 with large fibroids, causing interminet discomfort on my left side. No others problems at all. My periods are normal. I am told by ultrasound that my uterus is filling almost my whole cavity and there are fibroids that are almost as big as my uterus. My GYN felt I should have a TAH, my PCP says I should also have it done as eventually I will start having more problems and they are perplexed why I don't now. My mother went through menopouse at 52 and as she says , "not one night sweat, not one hot flash", her period just went away. The doctors feel that I am looking at another 5 years of increased pain and all other complications. I have some questions and I was wondering if someone could please help me as I am up nights. I am so afraid I will feel so "robbed" and different without my female organs. I am afraid of night sweats, hot flashes, I am afraid my sex life will change (w/ my husband, who by the way could not be more supportive). I am about 30 pounds overweight. (lost 70 pounds 6 years ago and kept it off). I work out everyday, for the past few years and hired a trainer 4 weeks ago for weight training.... can this speed up the recovery? The discomfort from the fibroids does affect my workout sometimes. After being overweight and keeping the weight off I am so frightened of gaining weight. I am so angry this is happening. I just want to go on with my life w/ no interruptions and I feel bad because I should be glad I do not have cancer. Everyone I knows thinks I should have the surgery. If any one could reassure me, I would be so grateful. Thank you for listening, Kara p.s. I have a wonderful 16 yo and I am not concerned about not having any more children.

Welcome to Hysterspot Kara,
Sorry I didnt' respond sooner - I am working 2 jobs and haven't had a chance to be here as much as I'd like.
To answer your questions - I had a TAH and felt better post op - never have I felt like less of a person, and I doubt others have either.
I can't really tell you from personal experience if it changes your sex life - BUT I do know other ladies who have said that it improved their sex life!
I didn't gain any weight post op - I watched what I ate and because we can't cook postop for a bit - I prepared several items to freeze - cabbage rolls, quiche, etc - it eliminated the need to cook and the need to eat those tv dinners.
Your concerns are normal - we all felt that way when we learned that we were going to have a hyst - I felt the same myself - and went online to search for answers. I had numerous years to prepare for the inevitable but it still left me feeling scared, confused and uncertain when the doc finally said it was time.
You will be fine - fibroids can cause a great deal of discomfort, increase your flow and frequency - check out our links section - because there is a way to shrink the fibroids in some women - it isn't always the answer for some - but I do know that it can avoid or just delay having the hyst.
Hope I answered all your questions and was able to put you more at ease. Feel free to ask anything here - there isn't a question we haven't already asked ourselves.

Thank you so much for your reply. I saw my doctor again and now I have decided that the best thing for me is Uterine Fibroid Embolization. I am at the beginning stages of going through an MRI and then will need to see a Radiologist and go from there. Thank you again for answering all my questions. You are so positive and help so many women. I do hope this works out for me. Kara. Have a happy holiday season

Welcome to Hysterspot Carolle, I have not heard of many women still requiring the binding - most of the women if not all from this site have not worn one - IF you feel you need one however - call your surgeon or family doctor and ask him/her if they feel it is warranted - if they do they could advise you where you can find one - Hope this helps

If you have been - cleaning the house, doing laundry, cooking/dishes - then you are going to need to continue some pain meds - Feeling tired is normal and it can take up to a year for your body to completely heal - it is a very serious/heavy surgery your body needs time to adjust and to heal - take baby steps - 6 weeks is a guideline for DO NOTHING - after that its a pace yourself - once the doctor gives you the clear - you can start doing normal things again but listen to your body - and don't do what some previous hysterspotters did and rearrange furniture at week 8 lol - it could hurt a bit What did you have done?

Dread my kind of work, back to my 12 hours shift walking all day & pulling/pushing patients as needed. I am still having pains on & off. I am really glad...I found this website... thanks for your response. I have been doing regular housework without the heavy lifting....

Welcome to Hysterspot Dina - glad you found us -
The fear and uncertainty is normal - I suffered from a field of fibroids and frequent and heavy bleeding for several years before they finally decided it was time to do the Hysterectomy - all I can say is I wish I had done it sooner - I feel healthier and in control of my life again. Having a hysterectomy is a huge decision - but there are other options for some people - check out our links page and alternatives pages - and discuss all of your options with your surgeon before making a decision. Keep us updated - we are here to support you and answer your questions.
