Hi all! Lovely to find this site and not feel alone in all this! I just got home from the hospital yesterday - was in for 5 days, following a partial hysterectomy (had a large, very problematic submucosal fibroid that bothered me for years). So far, I am still in a bit of pain, and am having real bowel problems. I have never had problem with constipation before, but I'm making up for a lifetime of ease right now! My stomach is very puffy and sore, and this gas build up is awful! I can pass a bit of the gas, but despite prune juice, apricots, plums, cereal, etc, I could only manage a bowel movement that resembled a rabbit dropping yesterday. And that was so painful, I had a bit of pink when I wiped afterwards (back to clear again now) Same thing today. My stomach is still so tender I can't even blow my nose yet, so this bowel thing has become a real dilemma. How long can I go without going? ? Also, I'm a really thin person, and I'm wondering if this is making my pain worse? PS: I also decided to try to quit smoking the same day of my operation, so I'm 6 days smoke-free as well. Imagine how much fun it is to live with me right now!

Welcome to the Hyste Spot. Sorry I didn't see the post until today. Time is your friend after a hyst. The further post-op you are the better you will feel. It might help you to take some stool softeners and continue to eat fruit and fiber. Jana

Welcome to hysterspot. Gas is always a problem post op... do a lot of walking (short walks mind you)... it helps. Also, taking too many 'aids' might cause you to back up more.... most of the girls who have had major gas problems used Gas X they found it to work a charm. Call your doctor right away and let him/her know you are severely constipated and need releif.... I suffered constipation for the first 2 weeks... it is partially a result of the morphine/meds taken post op, and the anesthetic along with inactivity. Now this doesn't mean go out for a 3mile hike... just go for short walks... up and down your hallway, or just out front on the side walk several times a day.... it might sound silly but it does help. If you do what I did, you will -OD on all the aids (which it sounds like you may have) ... and then pay for it when they all hit at the same time.... Keep us posted on your progress... and ask any questions you may have... we have all been through it, and if one of us can't answer your questions another might, and if no one can, I will research it for you and help you find the answers. Remember... get lots of rest, NO LIFTING, NO HOUSEWORK, NO LAUNDRY, NO COOKING , NO DRIVING, and NO naughty behaviour til your doctor says its ok. ;D - six weeks isn't all that long - in 6 months time you'll be praying to have the '6 weeks of boredom back'

OH and congrats on quitting smoking.... I quit 18 1/2 yrs ago.... ;D .... just don't think about it, chew a lot of gum... and don't give a hoot about what ppl think of your new attitude .... once you get over that initial 2 weeks... it is smooth sailing.... ;D
