Here is a list of things to expect to happen at your pre-op visit. A. Pre-op Nurse 1. She/He will go over your medical history. Expect to be asked alot of questions. Make sure and take a list of medicines that you currently take and a list of any allergies. 2. She will get your blood pressure, pulse, respirations; and your height and weight. 3. She will give you a time to be at the hospital and a list of things that are helpful. 4. She will let you ask any questions that you need to ask regarding visiting hours, hospital policies, and such things.
B. Pre-op Testing 1. You will more than likely have a chest X-ray. For most people this is just a quick 2-view X-ray to make sure your lungs are in good health. 2. You will probably have an ECG(EKG). This is just to make sure your heart is in normal rhythm and to make sure it is healthy. 3. Your blood will be typed and crossmatched, having to get blood after a hysterectomy seems to be rare but does occasionally happen. You may even wish to speak to your doctor about giving your own blood before surgery, in the unlikely event that you would need it. 4. You will have a complete blood count (CBC). This is to make sure that you have a adequate amount of red blood cells and a normal white cell count.
C. You will have an anesthesiology consult. The anesthesiologist will fill out some paperwork and look at your throat to make sure you have a good airway. This is usually quick and painless.
*This is just a general guideline. If somoene thinks of something I have missed please PM me and I will modify the post*
